May Shipments Of Aditya Birla, Ambuja, Shree Cement Up On Infra, Construction Growth

GROWTH MIX

Cement sales firm on demand spurt

IF THE production and sales figures of cement companies for May are anything to go by, the industry could be emerging from the slowdown. Aditya Birla Group said its shipments in May rose 19.5% year-on-year to 3.18 million tonnes. The Birla group has a combined annual production capacity of 42 million tonnes through Grasim Industries and its subsidiary, UltraTech Cement. The group said its production rose 20% to 3.24 million tonnes last month.
In May, the shipments of the country's third-largest cement maker Ambuja Cements surged
8.3% y-o-y, while Shree Cement witnessed a 32.1% growth during the month.
The country's largest cement maker ACC did not publish its shipment
data for May.
Ambuja Cements, which is a strong player in the western markets, saw its production grow to 1.64 million tonnes in May from
1.49 million tonnes a year earlier. Shree Cement is a prominent player in the northern markets.
    Cement makers attributed the
spurt in demand to growth in the infrastructure and construction sectors. They, however, felt supply might exceed demand, once the additional capacity of 50 million tonnes comes up by the end of the current year.
The combined capacity of the Indian cement industry is pegged at 230 million tonnes.
