Enjoy 10 long weekends, but lose 7 holidays this yr

Mumbai: First the good news for all those planning their vacations in advance. Circa 2013 has 10 extended weekends (two more than last year) with two five-day weekends if one takes a day's leave mid-week. The bad news: seven public holidays coincide with the weekends as against only four last year.

The 2013 calendar also falls a tad short as compared to last year's on the number of actual holidays. Office-goers who enjoy a five-day week will get 121 holidays (last year there were 124) while those who get only second and fourth Saturdays off will have 93 straight holidays.
Be that as it may, with a little tweaking (read applying for leave on certain days), there are opportunities galore to sneak a few short vacations. The first 'five-day weekend' comes in March: with Rangpanchami on the 27th and Good Friday on the 29th , one only has to put in a leave applica
tion for the 28th if one works a five-day week. Those who don't will have to get leave for the 30th as well. The second five-day weekend comes between Ram Navami (Friday the 19thand Mahavir Jayanti (Tuesday the 23rd. The Monday in between (April 22) is not a holiday so those with a five-day week will have to apply for leave here; the six-day workforce will have to take leave on the 20th as well. MARK YOUR CALENDAR Republic Day, Laxmi Puja fall on weekends this year
The 'four-day weekends' (again, of course, with a little leave adjustment) fall in February, April, August and November around the holidays of Shivaji Jayanti (Feb 19), Gudhi Padwa (April 11), Independence Day (August 15) and Muharrum (November 14).
The three-day weekends of 2013 are all legitimate holidays without the crutch of extra leave—the first combines Eid-e-Milad, Republic Day and Sunday (Jan 25, 26 and 27), followed by three more in the months of Au
gust, September and November. The three-day weekend in November can be further extended by government employees who get leave on Bhaiduj or Dhanteras. In August and September, these three-day weekends fall around Ramzan Id and Ganesh Chaturthi.
The seven holidays lost to weekends begin on January 26 which falls on a fourth Saturday. April 14, Ambedkar's birth anniversary, falls on a Sunday, followed by Buddha Poornima on May 25 (fourth Saturday), Parsi New Year on August 18 and Vijayadashami on October 13 (both Sundays). In November, Laxmi Pujan and Gurunanak Jayanti fall on a Sunday as well.
