MTNL to offer 3G connection for Rs 109

Mumbai/New Delhi: Staterun telecom operator Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) on Monday said it will offer new 3G prepaid connections for Rs 109 in its Mumbai circle.
    New subscribers can avail of the new 3G tariff with local voice and video call charges at 20 paise per minute on own local network and 50 paise per minute for other local networks across the Mumbai telecom circle with lifetime validity, MTNL said in a statement.
    The new connection comes loaded with 25 minutes of free video call, 25 MB of free data usage as well as talk time of Rs 25, it said. STD voice and video calls would be charged at 75 paise.
    In another development, the PSU has issued a $20-million global tender for installation and commissioning of 200,000 GSM lines, including 3G, for its Mauritius unit.
    The telecom operator posted a drop of 77% in net profit at Rs 21 crore for the second quarter ended September 30, 2009, as compared to Rs 91 crore registered last year. Revenues dropped by 18% to Rs 1,116 crore.
    The firm's new plan, aimed at ramping up subscribers, is a promotional one and will be available for 30 days. In August, minister of state for telecom Sachin Pilot had disclosed in the Rajya Sabha that MTNL had managed to get only 902 subscribers for its 3G services.
    Analysts maintain that the low numbers and the decline in profit could ensure more schemes from the operator in the short term.
    The Mauritius project will be divided into two phases — the first one for 100,000 2G lines and the second comprising 50,000 2G lines. There will be 50,000 3G lines at a later stage. MTNL is operating in Mauritius through its fully-owned subsidiary, called MTML (Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius).
    MTNL has started accepting bids for the tender from October 14 and the last date is November 7.
