BULLS MAY SINGH ALONG

After the euphoria, it's time for tough calls. As Congress gets ready to take charge of the nation's affairs -- without the usual interference from allies — India Inc's full of hope. And, the market just can't wait to get off to a flyer Cong's humbled opponents now bargain at basement prices

AFTER spending an entire day licking its chops in glee at having decimated its opponents virtually across the country, the Congress on Sunday got down to serious business: government formation.
The core committee of the party, which met on Sunday afternoon at the PM's residence to decide on the shape of the alliance, was confronted with an embarrassment of riches — a cornucopia of humbled regional
satraps were falling over each other to offer support in the hope of some crumbs of office.
The panel, which debated the unsolicited support offered by the SP, left the decision to Sonia Gandhi. The meeting felt that the decision should be taken in consultation with Rahul Gandhi. The Congress general secretary feels that
the party should not take any step that inhibits its plans in the Hindi heartland.
At the same time, party leaders are keen to ensure numerical cushion. Although they agree that an alliance with the SP will not suit the Congress' long-term political calculations in UP, there is a view that the party should mobilise adequate numbers to ensure it can withstand pressure from an ally or two. "If we have the support of more than 300 MPs, no ally can interfere in governance issues," a senior Congress leader said. On its part, the SP conveyed its support for the Congress' power project to Prime Minister.
Earlier in the day, the RJD reiterated that it
was very much a part of the UPA and the NCP said it won't haggle for prime slots. But the SP's offer of support was not greeted with enthusiasm. The Congress' studio warriors rushed before cameras to say that their party can do without the SP. That the party was yet to take a call on the issue was evident when the Congress spokesman said that the government formation will be discussed with its "pre-poll" allies — DMK, TC, NCP, NC, IUML and JMM. In other words, the SP and the RJD would have to wait.
Offers of support were pouring in through the day. HD Deve Gowda's JD(S) that left
Prakash Karat's fantasy front, three independents from Maharashtra, former JD(U) leader Digvijay Singh and Jharkhand's Madhu Koda have promised support. This is certain to be an ego booster for the Congress, as just two days ago, senior leaders were feverishly working their mobile phones to enlist support on the assumption that the elections will throw up a hung Parliament.
The Congress must be savouring this moment, as allocation of ministerial berths in the last government was part of the prime ministerial prerogative only figuratively. The changed scenario will help the prime minister finally tap his office's potential.
Meanwhile, senior party leaders vied with each other to demand that Rahul Gandhi, who is being described as the architect of the victory, be inducted into the Union Cabinet. The Congress general secretary is against participating in the government at this juncture.
